Sushma Sivakuma, 601 Returns Engineering
"Hello!
I am Sushma. I have been working as a Senior Software Engineer at Avalara for the past 1.5 years. I have
an overall experience of 7.5 years in software development.
My journey so far has been exciting and rewarding. I joined Avalara with the expectation of taking on
challenging technical tasks at scale and have had ample opportunities to do the same. As our career
progresses, doing the same kind of tasks could make work monotonous. But that has not been the case for
me in Avalara. I have explored and worked on a variety of technologies and tasks which has allowed me to
expand my skill set and, at the same time, kept work exciting.
I am a remote employee from Bangalore. My manager and team have been very friendly and have made sure
that I don't miss the office setup. I have always felt valued and heard by the management, especially my
manager, with whom I have regular check-ins and who actively tries to alleviate any concerns. There are
multiple recognition programs that recognises employee contributions like SPOT awards and bonuses. I've
felt encouraged and motivated when I received those rewards.
This is one of the best teams I have been part of in terms of work-life balance. Finally, I've had the
chance to speak candidly and openly with the leadership regarding diversity. I am pleased that proactive
measures are being taken in this area. I would recommend Avalara to everyone due to its great culture,
employee benefits, and outstanding talent to work with."
Surabhi Apurva, 601 Returns Engineering
"Hello,
I'm Surabhi,
I've been working as an ETL developer for the past 7.5 years. I've been part of Avalara for the past 1.5
years. One of the main reasons why I chose Avalara over my other offers was because I'd received great
feedback about the company's working culture. This is the best bunch of people I've worked with in my
career. They're not just great resources in terms of skill set, but are also awesome for a coffee table
conversation. Everyone I've worked with has been very approachable regardless of the level they're at.
I've always felt appreciated and heard in my team. My manager has been very supportive in both the
office work as well as my individual career growth. The company provides us regular opportunities to
expand our knowledge base by providing us learning resources as well as chances to achieve
certifications. Although I work as a remote employee, the geographical distance has never been felt
much.
Personally for me, maintaining a good work-life balance and having a great work culture is extremely
essential. Since I have to work with US and UK counterparts regularly, I work in flexible hours on most
days to manage the time difference. My manager and my overseas counterparts have been very supportive
and also guided me on how to manage my time more efficiently so that I don't burn out.
My time here has been fulfilling and satisfying both professionally and personally. And knowing
Avalara, I expect my future to be better here!"

"Unveiling My Odyssey with Avalara
Hello Everyone,
My name is Vishnupriya, and I joined Avalara exactly 2 years ago as an Operations Specialist in the IT
Team.
I was drawn to the company's mission and values and knew that I wanted to be a part of something that
was global and of high impact, and I am glad I chose Avalara!
I have had the opportunity to work with some of the most talented individuals in the industry.
Of course, no journey is without its challenges. Throughout my time with the organization, I have faced
several obstacles that have tested my resolve and forced me to grow as both a person and a
professional.
The best part of Avalara is that you don’t feel lonely in those tough times or while handling those
obstacles.
Avalara’s people-friendly policies and an even friendlier HR team help you tide over those tough times
much faster and easier.
I really want to thank my leadership for the support and guidance and the opportunities offered, which
helped me thrive in my role despite the fact that I am the only female member of the team.
Their commitment to creating a supportive and diverse environment has, in fact, encouraged me to refer
and hire more female candidates from my friends’ circle.
Having a good work-life balance is one of the keys to have a happy and fulfilling work life.
Avalara offers flexible hours/work arrangements to help balance my work and family responsibilities.
I really appreciate the organization's commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for
its female employees and its promotion of diversity and inclusion through various initiatives and forums
such as "Women of Avalara”, mentorship programs, and leadership development opportunities.
Throughout my time with this organization, I have grown both personally and professionally, and I am
grateful for the opportunities that have been presented to me."
Swati Shrivastava, 604 AvaTax Engineering
"Hello Everyone,
It has been 11 years with Avalara and the journey so far has been like a whirlwind. The memories are so
vivid that I can keep on writing about each and every day, but I will restrict myself and be concise in
sharing my emotions.
I joined Avalara as Trainee QA on 4th of July 2012 as my 1st Company. I was a manual tester back then. I
received great support and mentorship from the leaders. I was the 47th employee of Avalara India
office.
Leadership has made tremendous efforts to introduce automation testing and move manual testers to
automation testing. I got incredible exposure to Selenium, .Net coding, etc. This initiative created a
strong foundation for my journey in the company ahead.
In 2014, there was an Internal Job Posting in CALC team for Quality Analyst. I was referred by
management to take up this challenging role. I was quite nervous by the thought of joining a core engine
team, which is very impactful for our company’s success. The skills I accumulated so far helped me
justify my role and helped me grow. My exposure to automation testing helped us to move and own the
automation process at the Pune location.
I received great support and trust from the leadership in whichever initiatives I grabbed. In 2016, I
got promoted to Associate SDET. It is said that a leader is the one who is accepted by all. I would like
to thank my team who helped me step up the ladder to SDET lead and then to SDET manager and now as a
Technical Product Owner.
Having a good work-life balance is one of the keys to having a happy and fulfilling work life.
As a mother, I sometimes face a lot of challenges to do my job on a daily basis as I have to take care
of my kid. Avalara offers flexible hours/work arrangements to help balance my work and family
responsibilities.
Recently, Avalara has awarded me the “Hard Hat” Award. Thanks to all my leadership team for showing
faith in me.
Swapnil Shukla, 601 Returns Engineering
"Hello Everyone,
My name is Swapnil Shukla. I am a Software Engineer with 8 years of experience working with various
technologies like .NET, Javascript, PHP, React JS, Terraform, AWS.
I started my journey with a service-based company, and as a software developer, you always want to work
for product-based companies where you can be a part of the products being developed & maintained.
One of my ex-colleagues told me about the company & its wonderful working culture & referred me
here.
The interview process went very smooth & transparent.
In the HR round, I was informed about the company's commitment to gender diversity & its various
programs & groups organized in the company for female employees.
For me, Avalara has always been an employee-friendly company focusing on the employees' growth &
well-being along with the company's growth. My manager has always been very supportive & encouraging.
From giving us an opportunity to try enhancing the current project I am working on to giving us all the
new opportunities which can help us in our upscaling.
There are various cohorts being organized to help employees upscale themselves. This company always
gives an opportunity to grow & work simultaneously.
Talking about work-life balance here, it's great. With flexible work arrangements, I had more control
over my time, which enabled me to fulfill personal responsibilities while meeting work commitments. It's
been 2.5 years working here & I have enjoyed both my professional & personal life equally.
The company's various employees' wellness programs, regularly organized health camps, various sports
events are a great initiative to encourage work-life balance.
Proud to be Avalarian."
Pooja Soude, 606 Connectors Engineering
"Hello, I am Pooja Soude working as a senior tech lead in Avalara since 2022. I did a master’s degree
in computer application from Nagpur University and certified cloud engineer for both Microsoft Azure and

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities and support I have received at Avalara. As a woman in

Since joining Avalara, I have had the privilege of working on diverse projects that have allowed me to
showcase my skills and contribute to Avalara’s success. The inclusive and supportive environment has
enabled me to thrive, and I am grateful for the mentorship and guidance received along the way.
Avalara has played a pivotal role in my professional development journey. The commitment and
encouragement to professional training, learning resources, and certification programs have allowed me
to expand my skill set and stay ahead in a rapidly evolving industry. Avalara’s investment in my growth
has positioned me as a valuable asset.
I wholeheartedly believe that Avalara offers a unique and empowering environment for women to thrive and
succeed. It values diversity, fosters growth, and celebrates the achievements of women. “Women of
Avalara (WOA)” is a platform where women from different teams in Avalara come together to share their
achievements and mentor each other.
Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential for long-term success and well-being. At Avalara, I
have been fortunate to be part of a culture that values work-life balance and supports employees in
achieving it. This balance allows me to bring my best self to both my personal life and my work,
resulting in increased productivity, creativity, and overall satisfaction.
I am proud to be part of this remarkable team and look forward to continuing to contribute to its

Sathiya Balasubramanian, 616 Indix - Research and
Development
"Dr. Sathiya Balasubramanian, Machine Learning Engineer, Avalara
I am a Machine Learning Engineer with 9+ years of experience in industry and research. Skilled in
Machine Learning, Deep Learning, NLP, Data analysis, Python, Java, C and SQL. I have pursued my Bachelor
and Master of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering stream. Later, I have completed my Doctor
of Philosophy in NLP, ML and Knowledge modelling.
In Avalara, we will have the opportunity to work at end – to – end project starting from data
preparation to deployment. This can give us hands-on the entire life cycle of a product. The projects
are well-defined and solved using cutting edge technologies and latest hardware infrastructures. Few of
the work we are doing here can be summarized as follows:
- We are working on complete pipeline of live multi-level hierarchical classification product. This is
a complicated project due to the dynamically changing nature of thousands of hierarchical sets of
classes and heavily imbalance data. Core work of this product are:
- Coordinated with annotation team for labelling training data, prepared training data
meticulously and trained multi-level hierarchical BERT classification model using BERT Language
Model.
- We have trained an AVALARA domain specific BERT Masked Language Model (MLM) with carefully
curated training corpus, to be used as the base LM model for the classification task.
- Next, we trained and deployed a suite of multi hierarchical BERT classification models and Long
transformer models to classify the labels.
- All these models are deployed in K8 clusters and deployment is automated using CI/CD pipelines.
- We are also working in developing a tool which aims at representing quality of the customer data and
it is deployed in AWS-EKS. Specifically, we are working at training data analysis and preparation,
BERT Question Answering modelling for entity extraction and inferencing, API endpoints, UI
implementation, database querying.
Talking about work culture of Avalara is a MUST. They have a well-defined work culture which promotes
harmony, transparency, and work-life balance. Permanent remote working option and flexible working timing
and most importantly cooperative mangers and team makes it an incredible place to work with. At the same
time, we can make great progress in our career with most competitive projects in market with bright minds
working together. Me being a mother of toddler and ambitionist, chose Avalara and will continue to work in
for the same reason."
Smita Pitrubhakt, 606 Connectors Engineering
"After completing my bachelor’s degree in computer. When I started looking for a job, I found Avalara
on Naukri platform. I was not much aware of the company but when I started exploring, I learned that
it’s based on tax automation which was quite new and interesting for me, and I got my first job at
Avalara.
Since then, I have been working with Avalara for nearly 11 years now and I am the mother of a little
girl. I am proud to be a part of the growing firm.
Here at Avalara, the work culture is unbiased and supportive. I had opportunities to grow in my career
and uplift my skill sets.
Being at work we have equal opportunities to provide our opinions and point of view. Which helps as an
employee to think out of the box and would fear of being judge. The company always makes sure employees
are participating in different activities and being social. Where employees become more engaged, and
work becomes more meaningful and satisfying.
I always received true guidance from my seniors. Especially, guidance received from a senior female
leader, I was able to learn and achieve Scum Master role. Which was recognized and made me feel
empowered being a woman.
The company has given me a flexible environment to keep my personal life balanced in terms of managing
my family and my child. Which in turn motivates me to do better work.
Being a working mother I have realized how often women tend to hold themselves back because of fear. It
is important to recognize our fears and to name them; only then can we find a path to succeed.
I really appreciate the company policies for female employee safety. It helps me feel safe even if I am
working late.
Proud to be Avalarian!"
Preeti Ghatage, 606 Connectors Engineering
"I have pursued BTech in IT and have 5+ years of experience. I hold skills in Automation Development,
Testing and Release Management.
A friend in the company mentioned about hiring and suggested to apply. I determined the organization.
Learnt about the product. What interests me is the company culture. I really like the idea of a
close-knit team that is supportive and encourages progression. I also feel like the company has a lot to
offer in terms of career growth.
I came in as an inexperienced person to the field (Tax Compliance). My colleagues began to help me learn
and train to be a productive and valuable part of the QA team. Everyone is willing to help even if
you're in a different department. Engaging and collaborative work environment.
Avalara has made me responsible for my work contributions and seek out increased responsibility. And can
make independent decisions around work tasks to get the job done.
I have been encouraged with communications to increase levels of trust and show that all ideas are
welcome and valued.
I have been encouraged to learn and collaborate with different teams to understand the different
platforms (ERP’s, Technical opportunities) and contribute.
In my early phase of learning, my female colleague supported me to understand the culture of the team.
What are the processes followed within the team. How to analyze the customer queries and started with a
basic understanding of the product. Still, I can easily reach out to her for any blockers.
The perk of working at Avalara is flexible working arrangements and an employee-friendly absence policy.
I have frequently discussed family health with my communications with my Manager. Apart from trainings,
Avalara promotes fitness and healthy living by arranging wellbeing sessions.
The “Post Festive Detox” initiative promoted ways to switch to a balanced lifestyle and a Yoga Session
by Workplace-India Incorporated yoga, exercise at the workplace.
I have been recognized with feedback by the manager for grasping knowledge and for good work done.
As a female employee, I could not feel any discrimination in gender. There are equal opportunities for
everyone working here. You can be open with your thoughts and you are welcomed with your feedback. A
good workplace to keep the balance between personal and professional space for female employees."
Sujata Suhag, 606 Connectors Engineering
"My name is Sujata Suhag, and I work as Associate SDET with NetSuite Connector team. I have joined
Avalara in Dec 2018.
I got to know about Avalara from LinkedIn when I was looking for a job change. I searched more about
Avalara and then decided to go for an interview. After that, I got interviewed and from there I got to
know that the company is very employee-friendly, they consider their employee first and rest of the
things are secondary. This made me think and I decided to join Avalara. And till date, I feel the
same.
From day one, I got the supporting managers, mentors, and team members which have made the work
environment easy for me.
According to me, Avalara provided a good work-life balance for its employees. WFH is the option which
plays an important role in this. From my experience, I was never asked to work on weekends or late
nights, except for some critical situations.
Not as a female employee (because I have been treated equally as a male employee), but I have been
appreciated for the work which I have done or doing.
As a female employee, I have never felt that I have been treated wrongly. I have been given equal
opportunities as compared to male employees. Also, I have never observed any gender biasness."
Mrunal Khandekar, 103 Corporate Technology
"My name is Mrunal Khandekar, and I am working as an Applications Administrator for Salesforce with the
Avatech Team. I did my graduation in BSc Biotechnology. My first job was at Concentrix as a Customer
Service rep for 3.3 years following which I worked in Cognizant Tech Services for 3.3 years.
I wanted to complete Post Graduation in Forensic Science but after graduation, I realized the financial
situation at home and hence switched to the IT industry right after I completed my graduation. But soon
after working in Concentrix, I realized that IT is not a bad option for me as I had few mentors who
motivated me to continue in this industry as they found I had skills needed in customer service.
Further, I switched to Cognizant and got lucky to get trained for Salesforce and here is when my journey
towards Salesforce began.
I joined Avalara in June 2020 as a Software Engineer. This was the best moment of my life to be referred
to as a SE. I was referred to Avalara by one of my friends and colleagues when Covid was at its peak. I
was very terrified about quitting my job as Covid had struck India by that time but my friend gave me
confidence about how I can build my career in Avalara. He told me some great stuff about this company,
how great culture Avalara has, and the best growth opportunities it provides to its employees.
I was very impressed with the fast and smooth interview process. Honestly, I feel very lucky to be a
part of Avalara. This company has never failed to impress me with the overwhelming gesture it always
provides. The culture Avalara has is not what every company runs. Its flexible working hours, balanced
work life, attention towards every situation, understanding management is all worth it. I have been
given multiple career growth opportunities in the past 3 years, and I can confidently say that Avalara
has made me grow truly and bring out the confidence in me. As a wife and a mother, I am able to manage
house and work at a great pace. At times there are breakdowns, but the people around are always
supportive. In my total 9 years of work life, I have never had this great experience that I got working
in Avalara. One last thing I can say is that Avalara only focuses on Employee satisfaction and that
satisfaction runs a great company. If the employees are satisfied, only then the company turns out to be
great is what I feel. Currently, I am working as an Application Admin III in Avalara, and I am proud of
myself. The journey from a Customer Service rep to Application Admin was not an easy one but I made it
through and looking forward to more opportunities in Avalara."
Neha Pandey, 606 Connectors Engineering
"My name is Neha Pandey, and I work as an SDET with the Salesforce Connector team. I joined Avalara in
Dec 2016.
I got to know about Avalara from my Training institute. I did my own research for the company before
applying for an interview. In my final round, I got interviewed by one of my US stakeholders, and since
that day till now, I am excited about the cross-culturally diverse team and people working together from
all over the world.
All the team members are supportive, whether workwise or for any team-building activities. There is a
lot of transparency maintained among team members and with the manager. I get all the encouragement and
support to learn and groom my skills.
For a long duration, I was the only female member in the Salesforce Connector team, and I felt empowered
because of my team’s support. And because of the team’s culture, I never felt inefficient due to my
gender specifically.
With all the support from the manager and team, I was able to learn different tools and technology and
was able to switch from Manual QA to Automation.
I was mentored by a female leader for Avalara domain and release practices, Connectors
functionalities.
We are usually never asked to work during weekends except for some critical customer escalations.
In the MTG team, tested Avalara E-commerce site single-handedly.
I have worked on most of the Salesforce-based connectors, there were several connectors – e.g., B2C SFRA
– I acted as an SME for Cross-Border feature implementation, Reconciliation feature implementation, In
OMS connector – acted as an SME for Return feature and Cross-border feature implementation.
From an Automation perspective – Created a new Hybrid framework with Java Selenium and page object
model.
Automated almost all Salesforce connectors till date.
Did POC for Gitlab CICD implementation of the automation project, etc.
Avalara is a great place for work. I have always been given equal opportunities as compared to male
employees. Also, I have never observed any gender biasness till date."
Parul Goenka, 606 Connectors Engineering
"My name is Parul Goenka, and I am working as a Technical Lead with the Salesforce Connector team. I
have joined Avalara in June 2022.
After working for so many years, I got a chance to interact with a wonderful community of developers and
multi-skilled people. I got to know about Avalara and its culture and fortunately got an opportunity to
work with this organization.
After peer reviews and its employee-friendly culture, I decided to join this organization, and I think I
took the right decision.
Sometimes I feel I am fortunate enough to work with this wonderful team where I have received support
from all the team members and my manager.
I have received mentorship and guidance from the senior leadership and mentors.
Avalara has a good work-life balance for its employees. WFH is a great option which plays an important
role in this.
We are usually never asked to work during weekends except for some critical customer escalations.
It’s been a year, I have worked on Salesforce Billing, Sales Cloud, OMS, and FSL connectors.
Avalara is a great place to work with; I have always been given equal opportunity as compared to male
employees. Also, I have never experienced and observed any gender biasness till date."
Bhavna Chaurasia, 601 Returns Engineering
"My name is Bhavna Chaurasia, and I am working as an SDET with the Returns Compliance India team. I
have joined Avalara in Jan 2022.
I came to know about Avalara through one of my friends and was intrigued mostly about the flexible work
opportunity, tax domain, and competitive salary. I must say ever since I joined the company I have got
immense support and guidance from my colleagues and teammates. I made good friends in a short span of
the mentoring phase after joining Avalara.
The best thing I love about Avalara is senior leadership. They are so friendly and approachable that one
can work without any pressure or fear of micromanagement. This culture drives individuals to deliver
their 100 percent. Another perk of working at Avalara is their work-from-home policy, which helps in
maintaining work-life balance. On top of that, the quarterly events and outings organized by managers
definitely rejuvenate employees and help improve work-life balance.
I am also charmed by the process and agile practices being followed here. Retro meetings definitely act
as a morale booster since kudos are always given for deserving work. I have learned so much about the
tax domain and different automation tools in this 1.5 years of the journey with Avalara. I got the
chance to work with RC East and RC India teams which are both filled with amazing people.
I can't thank Avalara enough for making the work environment so healthy and happy."
